Health & Safety Protocols
Learn more about the University’s health and safety protocols to help protect the campus community from COVID-19 and reduce the spread of the virus.

Vaccinations and Boosters: To protect the health and safety of the Kean community, students and employees accessing any University facilities must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or receive a medical or religious exemption to the vaccination requirement.
All members of the Kean community are strongly encouraged to get a COVID-19 booster shot, if they are eligible, to help protect their own health and the health of those around them. You can make an appointment for a vaccination series or booster shot at locations across the state.
Mask Mandate: Kean became mask optional, in most circumstances, on Friday, April 1.
Anyone who feels more comfortable wearing a mask is welcome to do so, and all members of the University community are encouraged to respect others’ choices as we transition toward a mask-friendly, post-pandemic environment.
- Kean is providing free N95s to the Kean community on a voluntary basis. They are available at Kean Hall, Miron Student Center, or by submitting a SchoolDude request. The University will also continue to make cloth or disposable masks available, and other facial coverings are available for purchase in vending machines across campus. Please see Mask Mandate section below for additional information.
Reporting a Positive Case: Students who test positive for COVID-19 must report their test results to the University. Click here for a submission form. Employees who test positive for COVID-19 should report the result to hrvax@m1506.com or (908) 737-3300.
Every member of the Kean community plays an important role in protecting the health and well-being of our campus.
Together we will create a safe and welcoming learning environment for everyone.

Mask Mandate on Campus
Kean became mask optional, in most circumstances, on Friday, April 1.
Anyone who feels more comfortable wearing a mask is welcome to do so, and all members of the University community are encouraged to respect others’ choices as we transition toward a mask-friendly, post-pandemic environment.
Here are some important details about masking and vaccinations:
- The mask optional policy applies to everyone regardless of vaccination status. Students and employees who have medical or religious exemptions to the COVID-19 vaccination policy will continue to be subject to weekly testing.
- Masks will still be required in Student Health Services and a limited number of other clinical spaces, which will be clearly marked. Please comply with signage. Masks will be optional in residence halls.
- Following federal guidelines, masks will also still be required on Kean buses and shuttles through April 18. This includes any charter buses used for Athletics or other Kean-sponsored travel.
- Individuals on campus may request that the people around them wear masks, and consideration of those requests is appreciated. However, it is not required. The University will continue to make N95 respirator masks and portable plastic barriers available upon request.
- Everyone is encouraged to bring a mask to campus in case they need it. In this mask-friendly environment, the University will continue to provide N95s and other masks at the front desks of Kean Hall and the Miron Student Center as well as in vending machines. Information from the CDC about choosing an effective mask is available here.
- Anyone who is experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 should immediately wear a mask and consult a healthcare provider. Masks will be required for anyone who has been exposed to someone with COVID-19 or instructed to wear a mask by a healthcare provider.
Safety Training
All students should complete this safety training to learn the health and safety measures in effect on campus to safeguard the campus community and help stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Thank you for your participation in this important training program.
Prevention
- All members of the Kean community are encouraged to continue to wash their hands frequently and use hand sanitizing dispensers across campus to help prevent the spread of illness. If a dispenser needs to be replenished, please call the Housekeeping hotline at (908) 737-5010.
- The University will continue to employ enhanced cleaning protocols throughout the campus.
- Spray bottles of a disinfectant effective against COVID-19 and paper towel dispensers have been placed in classrooms. Call Housekeeping at (908) 737-5010 if the supplies need to be replenished.
- A Plexiglas barrier has been placed in each classroom for the instructor’s use. If one is missing or damaged, place a work order at the Facilities and Campus Planning site here and select “Health/Safety” as the craft.
- Office areas can request a spray bottle of disinfectant and paper towels by calling Housekeeping at (908) 737-5010.
- The restroom cleaning schedule is posted on the back of the door in each restroom. If a restroom requires attention between cleanings, call Housekeeping at (908) 737-5010.
- Drinking directly from water fountains is not permitted. Fountains may be used to fill up cups or bottles only.
- Students who use public transportation should take extra precautions with regard to hand hygiene and remember to wear a face covering and bring hand sanitizer. They should limit touching frequently touched surfaces and wash their hands or use hand sanitizer upon arrival to campus.
- The Kean University division of Campus Planning reviewed all buildings in preparation for a safe return to campus. Major enhancements were made in the areas of indoor air quality, building operations, and enhanced cleaning protocols. All Kean University standards for facilities systems and procedures meet or exceed state Indoor Air Quality Standards.
